Retinol, retinoid, tretinoin. What’s the difference?
There are many products available that claim to address fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging and sun exposure. But what are the differences and what really works?
Retinoids
Retinoids is a term for a chemical class of naturally occurring and synthetic compounds and derivatives of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for healthy teeth, bones and skin. It is not made by the body, but may be acquired through dietary sources (such as eggs, carrots and spinach).
Retinoic Acid
Retinoic Acid is an active form of Retinoid and immediately begins to penetrate and act on skin when applied.
Retinol
Retinol is a weak over-the-counter version that is widely available in many creams and cosmetics and does not require a a prescription. Some doctors and scientists have stated that Retinoic Acid is 10-100x as potent as the Retinols sold without a prescription.
Tretinoin
Scientists developed a form of Retinoic Acid — topical tretinoin — to treat acne in the late 60’s and overtime physicians noted that patients had fewer wrinkles and smoother skin. Now many dermatologists routinely prescribe it to their patients to treat aging skin.
